Cooperation between France and Latvia plays a significant part in the French Institute’s activities. One of the basic directions is promoting exchanges in the areas of art, literature, cinema, and the audio-visual and theatre arts.

Due to its cooperation with significant Latvian cultural institutions, each year the French Institute offers high quality cultural events with various kinds of artistic performances in Rīga, and in the regions: Picto Facto environmental installations, Christian Boltanski’s installations, the Krēsli interactive open-air sideshow, the 20 French Design Icons. The French Institute participates in important cultural festivals each year, supporting visits to Latvia by French artists. The French Institute cooperates with the innovative „Skaņu mežs” festival, „The International Piano Stars festival in Liepaja”, „Rīgas ritmi” festival, The International Baltic Ballet festival, the feast of Kuldiga, „Survival Kit” festival and „Homo Novus” festival. The French Institute in Latvia, together with the Danish Cultural Institute, The Goethe-Institut, The British Council, The Embassy of Greece in Latvia, and an associate member – the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia – Norden – forms the Latvian affiliate of EUNIC.

Educational opportunities, stipends and artists’ residences
The French Institute’s internet site regularly publishes offers about studies and practice for students and professionals in the cultural fiel, as well as invitations to apply for artist residencies.
The French Institute promotes the visits of French writers to Latvia, offering them the opportunity to stay at the „Ventspils mājā”.
The Writers’ and Translators’ House, which is under the jurisdiction of The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia is located in the 18th century Ventspils Town Hall building, and hosts writers and translators on a selected basis, within the framework of the most diverse projects.
